PrEP
What is PrEP?
PrEP, which stands for pre-exposure prophylaxis, is a medication that helps prevent HIV infection in people who are HIV-negative. It works by interfering with the virus's ability to replicate in the body, preventing it from establishing an infection. PrEP is highly effective when taken as prescribed, reducing the risk of HIV transmission through sex by about 99% and through injection drug use by more than 70% according to the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS).
How it Works?
PrEP medications block HIV from replicating in the body, preventing it from establishing an infection.
Who is it for?
PrEP is recommended for people who are at high risk of HIV infection, such as sexually active individuals who are not in a mutually monogamous relationship with an HIV-negative partner, and people who inject drugs.
